Panel Discussion

On 17th June 2024, the Bulan Institute organized a panel discussion in close collaboration with the Sustainable Energy Division of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE). Mr. Dario Liguti, Director of Sustainable Energy at the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE), delivered a keynote speech. We had esteemed speakers from the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, and the Davis Center at Harvard University. The expert panel discussion aimed to discuss the progress of the SDG 7 targets, positive tendencies, challenges and obstacles that hinder a smooth transition to renewables and how to accelerate efforts to close the existing gaps.

SDG7 includes five primary targets such as ensuring universal access to affordable, reliable, and modern energy services by 2030, substantially increasing the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix, doubling the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency, enhancing international cooperation to facilitate access to clean energy research and technology, and expanding infrastructure and upgrade technology for supplying modern and sustainable energy services in developing countries, particularly least developed countries, small island developing states, and land-locked developing countries.

While renewable energy technologies are becoming increasingly affordable, reliable, and efficient, most countries are still dependent on fossil fuels. The event looked closely at the regional situation in UNECE countries and emphasize that the implementation of new energy solutions is essential to combat climate change, one of the most significant threats to human survival. Expanding infrastructure and upgrading technology to provide clean energy sources in all developing countries is a crucial goal that can both encourage growth and help the environment.
