Enhancing education opportunities for children in Kyrgyzstan

About the Project

Implemented from 2017 to 2020, this project aimed to enhance education opportunities for children in Kyrgyzstan by addressing systemic challenges within the national education system. The project conducted comprehensive research to identify and analyze key problems in school education and propose evidence-based solutions.

A significant focus was placed on the safety and condition of school infrastructure. We assessed the structural integrity of school buildings across the country and published a major report mapping outdated facilities in urgent need of reconstruction. The project also examined the financing mechanisms for school construction, identified the responsible institutions, and evaluated accountability systems to ensure construction quality.

In parallel, we conducted in-depth research on the quality of school textbooks and published findings with recommendations on how to improve textbook development and approval processes. The social status and working condition

Additionally, the project addressed the role of religious education institutions (madrasahs) in Kyrgyzstan. A dedicated sub-project investigated how some madrasahs are financed from abroad, the extent to which they adhere to the national curriculum, and their potential role in fostering radicalization. The research highlighted the importance of integrating madrasahs into the broader educational framework while ensuring compliance with national education standards.

Through this multifaceted approach, the project provided critical insights and policy guidance to improve the quality, inclusiveness, and security of education in Kyrgyzstan.
