China’s Role in the Global Green Transition and Pathways for International Cooperation

On 13 May 2026, the Bulan Institute for Peace Innovations organized the online panel discussion entitled “China’s Role in the Global Green Transition and Pathways for International Cooperation.” The event brought together experts, researchers, and practitioners from international organizations, academia, and the renewable energy sector to discuss China’s growing role in renewable energy development, climate governance, and international cooperation.

The panel explored a wide range of issues related to the global energy transition, including China’s renewable energy transformation, technological innovation, overseas renewable energy projects, climate diplomacy, and opportunities for cooperation with developing regions, particularly Central Asia.

The event featured presentations by distinguished experts:

  • Mr LEI Xiang, Programme Officer at the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA);

  • Professor Deborah Seligsohn, Villanova University, USA;

  • Dr Wei Shen, Senior Non-Residential Research Fellow at the International Institute of Green Finance;

  • Ms Nurzat Abdyrasulova, President of Unison Group, Kyrgyzstan.


Throughout the discussion, speakers highlighted the increasingly central role of renewable energy in shaping global economic transformation, energy security, and international cooperation. Discussions also emphasized the importance of technological innovation, long-term policy planning, international partnerships, and sustainable infrastructure development in accelerating the global green transition.

Particular attention was given to China’s rapid expansion in solar energy, wind power, battery technologies, and electric mobility, as well as the growing role of Chinese renewable energy projects in developing countries and emerging markets. The discussion further examined the strategic importance of Central Asia’s renewable energy potential and opportunities for regional cooperation.

The panel attracted participants from different regions of the world, including representatives of international organizations, diplomatic missions, academia, civil society, and the renewable energy sector, contributing to a dynamic and constructive exchange of perspectives.
