The Bulan Institute strives to support and empower human rights defenders in the focus regions. There is an increasing number of reports of attacks, threats and reprisals against human rights defenders. Intimidation and reprisals against human rights defenders in retaliation for their engagement with international and regional human rights systems constitute an attack on human rights, the rule of law, and the international and regional mechanisms themselves.
Our institute condemns and make evident cases of reprisals, provides protective publicity to human rights defenders at risk, and seeks to ensure that national, international and regional human rights systems have the mechanisms to prevent reprisals and ensure accountability where abuses occur. We also train human rights defenders and equip them with skills so that they can use international and regional human rights mechanisms in the most powerful and effective ways.
